The race
The Barfoot & Thompson Runaway Auckland Marathon is New Zealand's biggest running event and has been part of Auckland life since 1992: in 2026 it celebrates 35 years. It takes place on Sunday 1 November 2026.
The signature moment is the crossing of the Auckland Harbour Bridge, with views over the Waitematā Harbour and Rangitoto Island. The marathon and half start on King Edward Parade in Devonport, on the North Shore, and finish in Victoria Park in the city centre; both are AIMS certified.
The programme includes the marathon (6:00 start), the half marathon (6:50), the 11km Traverse (8:40), the 5km (11:00), the 2.2km Kids Marathon and a wheelchair division. Every marathon and half marathon finisher receives a medal.

Course
The marathon starts on the Devonport waterfront (King Edward Parade), runs through Takapuna and onto the Northern Busway to the Auckland Harbour Bridge, with views of the Waitematā and Rangitoto.
After descending into the city, the course loops past Westhaven Marina and the Viaduct Harbour, then follows the waterfront out and back to St Heliers Bay before finishing in Victoria Park. The first half is rolling, the second flat and fast with two small bridge rises.
The half marathon follows the same route from Devonport over the bridge, then passes Westhaven Marina and the Wynyard Quarter to Victoria Park. The busway and motorway are open to runners on race day only.
