The race

From 2027 it is called the Generali Berlin-Marathon, and it is the marathon of records: 13 world records have fallen on its roads, more than at any other marathon. The course, known as the flattest of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, starts on Straße des 17. Juni in the Tiergarten and winds through the city, passing through the Brandenburg Gate just before the finish.

More than 50,000 finishers, millions of spectators and 80 live bands along the route turn the weekend into a huge party. The time limit is 6 hours 15 minutes, places are allocated by lottery and bibs are collected at the Expo in the former Tempelhof Airport; on Saturday there is also a 5K over the final kilometres of the course.

Course

The course is a large loop that starts and finishes on Straße des 17. Juni in the Tiergarten, and it is known as the flattest of the Abbott World Marathon Majors. After the opening kilometres towards Charlottenburg (3K), it passes through Moabit along Alt-Moabit (5K) and the government district in the Tiergarten (7K). It then enters Mitte via Torstraße (9K) and the Alexanderplatz area (11K) before heading down to Kreuzberg: Reichenberger Straße (15K), Hasenheide (17K) and Gneisenaustraße (19K).

Halfway falls in Schöneberg; the route continues along Martin-Luther-Straße (23K), through Friedenau (25K), Wilmersdorf (27K) and Schmargendorf on Hohenzollerndamm (29-31K). The way back runs along Konstanzer Straße (33K), Tauentzienstraße (35K), Potsdamer Straße (37K) and Leipziger Straße (39K); at 41K runners are on Französische Straße, and the final stretch passes through the Brandenburg Gate before the finish.

The whole course is asphalt. The cut-off is at 33K at 3:50 pm and the finish closes at 5:15 pm.

Places are allocated by lottery: entries for the 26 September 2027 race are open from 1 October to 12 November 2026, and results are emailed on 3 December 2026. You can enter alone, as a team of 2-3 people (if the team is drawn, everyone runs) or as a fast runner with a marathon qualifying time from 2025 or 2026 at an AIMS-certified race or one in the Abbott WMM Age Group World Rankings: men 2:45 (born 2009-1983), 2:55 (1982-1968), 3:25 (1967 or earlier); women 3:10, 3:30 and 4:20 in the same bands.

A qualifying time does not guarantee a place: invalid proof moves you into the general lottery. Unsuccessful applicants can still run with an official charity partner (guaranteed place with fundraising) or an authorised tour operator, available in over 50 countries. Runners born in 2009 or earlier are eligible; walkers are welcome if they finish within the time limit, Nordic walking is not allowed.

The fee is €215, charged only after the draw, and includes four days of public transport (zones A, B and C), pacers in every wave, a downloadable certificate, massages and a finish-line poncho (or a clothing bag for €5, chosen at registration). Fees are non-refundable and entries cannot be transferred or deferred; cancellation insurance can be bought at registration, and pregnant runners can postpone their place for up to three years.

The time limit is 6 hours 15 minutes, with a cut-off at 33K at 3:50 pm. Race materials are collected in person at the Expo in the former Tempelhof Airport with the start card sent by email and photo ID. The race follows German Athletics (DLV) and World Athletics rules; age-group winners aged 40 and over receive a free entry for the following year.

FAQ

How do I get a place in the 2027 Generali Berlin-Marathon?
Through the lottery: enter between 1 October and 12 November 2026 from your SCC EVENTS account, alone, as a team of 2-3 or as a runner with a qualifying time. Results are emailed on 3 December 2026. Official charity partners and tour operators are the alternatives.
How much is the entry fee and when is it charged?
The fee is €215 and is charged from 4 December 2026 only if you are drawn. A clothing bag instead of the poncho costs €5 extra and must be chosen at registration.
If I can't run, can I get a refund or transfer my place?
No: fees are non-refundable and places cannot be transferred to another person or year. You can protect your fee with Generali cancellation insurance, but only when you register. Pregnant runners can postpone their place for up to three years with a doctor's note.
Where and when do I collect my bib?
In person only, at the MARATHON EXPO by BRITA in the former Tempelhof Airport (Platz der Luftbrücke 5): Thursday 23 September 3-8 pm, Friday 24 10 am-8 pm and Saturday 25 9 am-7 pm, with your start card and photo ID. Entry to the Expo is free.
What is the time limit?
6 hours 15 minutes. There is a cut-off at 33K at 3:50 pm and the finish closes at 5:15 pm; slower runners must leave the course and can take the sweep bus.
How do I get to the start?
By public transport: your bib is a valid ticket in zones A, B and C from 23 to 26 September. The nearest stops are Unter den Linden, Bundestag, Brandenburger Tor, Potsdamer Platz and Berlin Hauptbahnhof.
