The race
The Brunello Crossing is a trail running event in the hills of Montalcino, through woods, Brunello vineyards, villages and farms. It was born from a group of sport and local enthusiasts and is organised by SSD Montalcino Trail, sanctioned by UISP.
The 2027 edition takes place on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 February 2027: Saturday is for bib collection, Sunday for the races. There are four distances:
- 45 km Trofeo Banfi, 1,820 m D+, start at 8:00
- 24 km Trofeo Camigliano, 1,100 m D+, start at 10:00
- 14 km Trofeo Enoteca La Fortezza, 650 m D+, start at 10:45
- 17.5 km Col d'Orcia Walk & Nordic Walking, non-competitive, wave starts from 9:30
The three competitive races start and finish in Piazza del Popolo; the race pack includes a bottle of wine and every finisher gets a wine glass.
Course
The competitive races start from Piazza del Popolo, cross the old town and leave through Porta al Cassero, next to the 14th-century Fortress. Through woods and vineyards the 45 km reaches Castello Banfi - Poggio alle Mura, climbs to the medieval village of Sant'Angelo in Colle and to Ventolaio, where it rejoins the 24 km.
The Patataio descent, overlooking the Val d'Orcia and Monte Amiata, leads to Castelnuovo dell'Abate and the Abbey of Sant'Antimo. The route then climbs to Il Cocco, one of the highest points, where the 14 km joins, and re-enters the town through Porta Cerbaia to the finish in the square.
The surface mixes trails, dirt roads and short stretches of tarmac, marked with flags, arrows and dots. Aid stations: 5 plus the final one on the 45 and 24 km, 2 plus the final one on the 14 km. The walk starts from Sant'Angelo Scalo, at the Col d'Orcia estate, and ends in Montalcino; a free shuttle is available after km 9 for those who stop early.
