The race
The SPAR Budapest Marathon® is the marathon of the Hungarian capital and, according to the organiser BSI, Hungary's largest sporting event: a running festival over a whole autumn weekend, with shorter races too. The 42nd edition takes place on Sunday 10 October 2027, and for now only marathon entries are open, at early bird prices until 9 November 2026: €95 standard, €75 for returning runners and €65 for students.
As in 2026, the course runs through the city centre on both banks of the Danube: the Chain Bridge, Andrássy Avenue to the Octagon, Liberty Bridge, Margaret Island and the Buda and Pest embankments. In 2026 the start was on Pázmány Péter Promenade near the ELTE Lágymányos campus, and the marathon had more than 10,000 entrants for the first time, from 121 countries, with 3,302 runners finishing their first-ever marathon.

Course
Course of the 2026 edition (the 2027 course has not been published yet). From Pázmány Péter Promenade next to the ELTE Lágymányos campus, the route follows the Buda Lower Quay, climbs to the Castle Garden and, via Attila Road and the tunnel under Castle Hill, reaches Clark Ádám Square. It crosses the Chain Bridge to Pest, runs up Bajcsy-Zsilinszky Road and Andrássy Avenue to the turnaround in front of the Octagon, returns to the Pest Lower Quay and crosses back to Buda via Fővám Square and Liberty Bridge, passing the start area again as far as Lágymányosi Bridge.
From the Buda quay it heads north to Árpád Bridge, loops around Margaret Island and comes back down into Pest (Népfürdő Street, Vizafogó Street), then follows the Pest and Újpest quays to the last turnaround and returns over Liberty Bridge to the finish on Pázmány Péter Promenade. Kilometre signs at 2 metres height and pacers for several target times.
In 2026 the aid stations were at km 4.1, 7.8, 11.3, 14.5, 18.6, 22.7, 24.1, 28.3, 31.8, 34.9 and beyond: water everywhere, isotonic drink, bananas, glucose tablets and lemons from km 7.8, salt tablets at some points, and magnesium, calcium and Pepsi from km 31.8; portable toilets at the aid stations.

Rules and requirements
The marathon is open to runners aged 18 or over on race day; the site's medical pages do not mention a certificate but ask runners to fill in the health details on the back of the bib and to follow the medical staff, who are at the start, along the course on bikes and motorbikes and at the relay exchanges. Registration is online only at entry.runinbudapest.com; for 2027 only the marathon is open so far, at early bird prices until 9 November 2026 (€95 standard, €75 for returning runners, €65 for students with a valid student card or ISIC shown at bib pick-up), after which the fee rises.
In 2026 the time limit was 5 hours 30 minutes net, aligned with the start of the last wave, with a sweep bus at the pace of the final pacer: runners overtaken must board it and their bib is invalidated. Wave start by declared pace. Bibs cannot be transferred or sold and names cannot be changed; you can switch distance.
Withdrawing through your account at least six weeks before gives you the fee as credit minus €5, later (until the Wednesday of race week) minus 20%; the credit is valid for BSI races until 31 December of the following year.
