The race

The Cardiff Half Marathon is one of Europe's largest half marathons and Wales' biggest mass-participation event, with more than 29,000 registered runners alongside elite men's, women's and wheelchair races. Founded by Barnardo's in 2003 with 1,500 runners, it hosted the World Half Marathon Championships in 2016 and the Commonwealth Half Marathon Championships in 2018, stages the Welsh championships every year and holds a World Athletics Elite Road Race Label.

It is the SuperHalfs race in the UK and raises more than £3 million for charity every year. The 2027 race is on Sunday 3 October on a flat, fast course that starts outside Cardiff Castle and finishes at the Civic Centre, taking in the Principality Stadium, Penarth, Cardiff Bay and Roath Park Lake. The start is at 10:00 on Castle Street, with a 4-hour time limit.

Places are allocated by ballot (UK £59, international £70), which closes on 18 October 2026. On Saturday the Cardiff Half Junior offers family races.

Course

The race starts on Castle Street, outside Cardiff Castle, and heads past the Principality Stadium and Cardiff City Stadium on the way to Penarth, where runners pass the marina. It then crosses the Cardiff Bay Barrage into the heart of Cardiff Bay, with the Norwegian Church, the Senedd and the Wales Millennium Centre. The course then heads north, loops Roath Park Lake and finishes with a grandstand finish at the Civic Centre in the city centre.

It is predominantly flat and fast, and has been measured by an AUKCM Grade 1 / IAAF / AIMS Grade B course measurer. There are water, sports drink and gel stations along the route, with toilets at every drink station and within the first mile. The Strava route is an estimated representation of the course.
