The race
In 2027 the TCS London Marathon becomes The Double: for the first and only time it takes place over two days, Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 April, on the same course and with 100,000 participants in total. One of the Abbott World Marathon Majors and the world's largest annual one-day fundraising event, it starts between Greenwich and Blackheath, crosses Tower Bridge, loops through Canary Wharf and the Docklands and finishes on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.
The course is fast, with 75 metres of elevation gain, pacers from 3 hours to 7 hours 30 and London crowds along all 26.2 miles. Places come through the ballot (GBP 79.99 for UK residents, GBP 275 for international runners), charity places, Good For Age and Championship times, or packages from the official tour operators.
The men's Championship and Good For Age races are on Saturday and the women's on Sunday. In 2026 Sabastian Sawe won in 1:59:30, the first sub-two-hour time in an official marathon, and Tigst Assefa improved the women-only world record with 2:15:41. Event Packs are collected at the TCS London Marathon Running Show at ExCeL London in the days before the race.

Course
There are three start lines between Greenwich and Blackheath; the groups merge just before Mile 3 (km 5) in Woolwich. The route heads west through Charlton, Greenwich and Deptford, looping around the Cutty Sark between Miles 6 and 7 (km 10-11), then through Rotherhithe and along Jamaica Road in Bermondsey to Tower Bridge, where the roar of the crowd carries runners across the Thames towards halfway.
North of the river it heads east along The Highway to Westferry and circles the Isle of Dogs through Mudchute, the Docklands and Canary Wharf (Miles 15-20), where tall buildings can upset GPS watches. Just after Mile 21 comes Rainbow Row in Limehouse, then The Highway again; the final five miles take in Tower Hill and Victoria Embankment, turn right at Westminster Bridge, pass Parliament Square and Birdcage Walk and, after the last corner in front of Buckingham Palace, finish on The Mall.
The surface is asphalt, elevation gain is 75 metres and the first miles are slightly downhill. BUXTON water every three miles from Mile 3 to 12 and then every two miles to Mile 24, Lucozade Sport at Miles 7, 15, 21 and 23, gels at Miles 13 and 19 and refill points at Miles 5, 10, 14, 17 and 20; toilets every mile from Mile 1 to 24.

Rules and requirements
Runners must be at least 18 on race day. There are five ways in. The 2027 ballot, open from 24 April to 1 May 2026, is a pure random draw: successful applicants had to confirm by 31 July, paying GBP 79.99 (GBP 49.99 for those who donated their fee in advance) if UK residents and GBP 275 if international, including a carbon offset levy for travel.
Charity places are requested directly from one of the charity partners, which set their own fundraising commitment. Good For Age is for UK residents with a time run between 1 October 2025 and 30 September 2026 (for example under 2:52 for men and 3:38 for women aged 18-39), with 3,000 places for men and 3,000 for women. Championship entry requires membership of a UK athletics body and a marathon under 2:38 (men) or 3:10 (women), or a half under 1:11:30 or 1:26:00, with 1,200 places.
International runners who missed the ballot can secure a guaranteed place with the official tour operators. Medal and T-shirt are opt-in at entry. Entries cannot be transferred and the allocated day cannot be changed; there are no refunds, but ballot places can be deferred by paying the fee again.
On Saturday the finish on The Mall closes at 17:30 (7 hours 45 minutes at most); on Sunday the secondary finish in Green Park stays open until 23:59:59. Event Packs are collected only at the Running Show, also by a nominated person, never by post or on race day.
