The race
The Maratombola is the end-of-year eco-marathon organised by ASD Marathon Truppen of Rome, with technical support from ASD Marathon Roma Castelfusano: the 12th edition takes place on Sunday 20 December 2026 in the Castelfusano pine forest at Ostia. Runners cover 43 km in 8 laps of 5.375 km, half on dirt and half on asphalt, all inside the green lung of the Roman coast, starting at 9:00 from Via dei Transatlantici with a 6-hour time limit.
Its hallmark is a light-hearted spirit: there are no prizes for overall or age-group placings, but every finisher gets a medal and certificate, and the party ends with a bingo-style draw with prizes matched to bib numbers. From 2026 the race is also the IUTA Italian Eco-marathon Championship, a round of the IUTA Ultratrail Grand Prix and the second round of the IUTA Italian Combined Championship.
The fee is €40 until 31 October and €45 until 10 December; after costs, proceeds go to Doctors with Africa CUAMM. There are no relays this year.
Course
Start and finish on Via dei Transatlantici, in the Castelfusano pine forest at Ostia, inside the Litorale Romano Regional Park. The course is a 5.375 km loop run 8 times, 43 km in total, half on dirt and half on asphalt, fully marked with tape and ground signs. Runners pass the aid station twice per lap, 15 stops in all plus the finish refreshment, with drinks and solid food; emergency call points are located at the aid stations. No mandatory kit is required, and dogs or unregistered pacers are not allowed.
