The race
The EDP Maratona do Porto is northern Portugal's big autumn marathon: it has been run since 2004, usually in November, and the 22nd edition is scheduled for Sunday 8 November 2026 with an 8:00 start. It is organised by Runporto.com with the support of the municipalities of Porto, Matosinhos and Vila Nova de Gaia and the Portuguese athletics federation.
The flat, fast course combines sea and river: it starts in front of SEA LIFE Porto, heads up the coast to Matosinhos, comes back down to the mouth of the Douro and passes through the historic centre, the Ribeira, the D. Luís bridge and the Port wine cellars in Gaia before finishing at the Queimódromo, next to the Parque da Cidade. Alongside the marathon there are the EDP 10K and the non-competitive Mimosa APO 6K walk, open to all ages, for around 15,000 participants in total.
In the two days before, the Expo Marathon at the Centro de Congressos da Alfândega do Porto hands out bibs and hosts the pasta party; more than 15,000 people visited it in 2025. There are pacers from 3:00 to 4:45, refreshment points every 5 km, bag drop and showers near the finish, and a prize purse that also rewards times under 2:11 for men and 2:29 for women.

Course
The start is at 8:00 on Via do Castelo do Queijo, in front of SEA LIFE Porto. The first kilometres head north along the seafront to Matosinhos, with a turnaround around km 10 and a pass near the port before km 15. The course then returns south along the ocean, passes the start area again and runs down through Foz to the mouth of the Douro (20 km).
From there it follows the river to Porto's historic centre, the Ribeira and the D. Luís bridge, runs along the Vila Nova de Gaia bank with its Port wine cellars (between km 25 and 30) and comes back along the Douro and the coast to the finish at the Queimódromo, next to the Parque da Cidade. The profile is almost flat, always below 30 metres of altitude, and entirely on tarmac.
Along the way there are entertainment points, Red Cross posts, toilets and metro stations. The first runner is expected at the finish around 10:10, the last by 14:00.
