The race
The NAHA Marathon is Okinawa's mass marathon and bills itself as "a festival of sun, sea and joggers". It was created in 1985 to celebrate 25 years of sister-city ties between Naha and Honolulu and has been held every December since: the 2026 race is the 40th edition, on Sunday 6 December 2026.
The start is at 9:00 in front of Onoyama Park and the finish is at the Onoyama athletics stadium, with a time limit of 6 hours 15 minutes. There are 30,000 places (including 2,500 linked to the "furusato nozei" hometown tax scheme for the towns on the course), and 14 entrants have finished it 39 times in a row.
Every runner who finishes within the limit receives a medal and certificate. Entries for 2026 are closed.
Course
The course, certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations, is the "NAHA Marathon – Heiwa Kinen Koen Course": from Naha it heads to the south of the island and passes through the Peace Memorial Park (Heiwa Kinen Koen), site of the first cut-off point, before returning to Onoyama.
There are cut-off points and recommended stop times along the route: runners who miss them must remove their bib and move to the pavement. Retirement buses circulate on the course and return to Onoyama Park when full.
