The race
The TCS New York City Marathon runs through all five boroughs: it starts on Staten Island, climbs onto the Verrazzano Bridge and passes through Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx before finishing in Central Park, Manhattan. 2026 marks 50 years of the five-borough course, and the race has broken the world record for the largest marathon two years in a row.
Starts are in waves from the Fort Wadsworth area: wheelchairs go at 8:00, professional women at 8:35 and professional men at 9:05. The whole city turns out along the route, and the finish stays open until 10 p.m. so that every participant can cross the line.

Course
The race starts at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, and the first two miles climb and descend the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. In Brooklyn runners spend a long stretch on Fourth Avenue through Bay Ridge, Sunset Park and Park Slope, then turn onto Lafayette Avenue towards Fort Greene and Clinton Hill and cross Williamsburg along Bedford Avenue to Greenpoint.
Halfway is in Long Island City, Queens; around mile 15 the course climbs the Queensboro Bridge and comes down onto First Avenue in Manhattan, heading up the Upper East Side towards Harlem. At mile 20 runners enter the Bronx over the Willis Avenue Bridge: in 2026, for the first time in 15 years, this section changes slightly (East 135th Street, Alexander Avenue, East 141st Street, Third Avenue and East 138th Street) before returning to Manhattan over the Madison Avenue Bridge.
The course then runs down Fifth Avenue, enters Central Park, passes along Central Park South and finishes in the park. Water and Gatorade are served every mile from 3 to 25 (except miles 5, 7 and 9), with tables on both sides; Culligan refill stations at miles 8, 14, 17, 20 and 23, Maurten gels at miles 12 and 18, bananas at mile 21.
Toilets and medical stations every mile from mile 3, markers every mile and every 5K. The course stays open for runners holding about a 16-minute mile based on the last wave start; sweep buses follow at the same pace.

Rules and requirements
The 1 November 2026 race is sold out. Entry is through the drawing (for 2026, applications ran from 4 to 25 February with the draw on 4 March), split into three pools: New York metro area, rest of the United States and non-US residents; NYRR members also go into a member-only second-chance drawing. Selected applicants are charged immediately on the card provided, with no refunds.
Guaranteed (non-complimentary) entry goes to NYRR members who completed the 9+1 programme (nine races and one volunteer shift), runners who have finished 15 New York City Marathons, runners who cancelled the year before, finishers of the guaranteed-entry virtual race and time qualifiers. For 2027 the marathon standards range from 2:53 (men 18-34) to 4:55 (men 80+) and from 3:13 to 6:35 for women and non-binary runners, set in 2026; half-marathon times count only at NYRR races, while times from other certified marathons give a limited number of places to the fastest in each age group.
There are also official charity partners, Team for Kids, Team for Climate ($4,000 fundraising plus a $150 programme fee) and, for non-US residents, official international tour operators with travel packages. The 2026 fee was $255 for NYRR members and $315 for non-members. Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable; you can cancel by 31 October and claim guaranteed entry for the following year.
Bibs are collected in person at the Expo with ID and confirmation email. Everyone who finishes by 10:00 pm is an official finisher, with a result, medal, 9+1 credit and a Six Star star; later finishers still receive a medal. Prize money requires a time under 3 hours 10 minutes.
