The race
Le Strade Storiche di Siena is a day of running and walking organised by ASD Sienarunners with the Le Mura association on Sunday 15 November 2026. The flagship race is the SS42, a competitive 42 km with about 950 metres of climbing: it starts at 8:15 in Asciano, in the Crete Senesi, and finishes at Siena's Medici Fortress after the Via Lauretana, the white roads of Monte Sante Marie, Torre a Castello, Monteaperti and the Via Francigena.
At 9:30 Le Mura di Siena City Trail starts from the Fortress, 12 km and 230 metres of climbing among walls, gates, green valleys and lanes of the UNESCO-listed centre, as a race or as a non-competitive Urban Walk. Fees range from €45 to €55 for the 42 km, €15 to €20 for the competitive 12 km and €10 to €15 for the walk, with entries until 11 November.
The 42 km includes free bag transport from Asciano to the finish and two cut-offs; Asciano can be reached by train from Siena.
Course
The SS42 starts in Asciano and follows the ancient Via Lauretana, then takes the white gravel roads up to Monte Sante Marie, one of the most spectacular stretches of the Crete, continues to Torre a Castello and Monteaperti, site of the 1260 battle, and joins the Via Francigena towards Siena. The last 7 km are entirely inside the medieval walls, through historic gates, lanes and squares, to the finish at the Medici Fortress.
The surface is mixed: about 18 km of gravel roads, farm tracks and paths, 17 km of asphalt and 7 km of urban paving and pietra serena; some sections may be open to traffic. Cut-offs at the Monteaperti aid station (km 23, 12:45) and the Due Ponti aid station (km 31, 14:15). The 12 km City Trail starts and finishes at the Medici Fortress and runs along walls, gates, stairways, fortifications and green valleys inside the city, with short but steep climbs and at least one water station.
