The race
The Totalsports Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town bills itself as "the world's most beautiful race". Born in 1970 as the Celtic 35 Mile Road Race, an initiative of the Celtic Harriers club, it has become a South African road-running institution.
In 2027 there is an event week from 31 March to 4 April, with a Night Run, the International Friendship Run and trail runs. The half marathon is on Saturday 3 April at 7:00; the 56 km ultra, in its 56th edition, closes the week on Sunday 4 April with a 6:00 start on Newlands Main Road.
The ultra loops around the Cape Peninsula and climbs Chapman's Peak, a road hanging above the ocean; both races finish at the University of Cape Town rugby fields. Each of the two main races now has 21,000 places.
Course
56 km ultra
The start is at 6:00 on Newlands Main Road, in 19 batches split into two groups. The route takes in Muizenberg, St James, Kalk Bay, Noordhoek, Hout Bay and Constantia and crosses Chapman's Peak, often cited as the world's most spectacular coastal drive, before returning to Newlands and the finish at the UCT Rugby Fields in Rondebosch.
Half marathon
Start at 7:00: the course runs through Claremont, Wynberg and Constantia, climbs Southern Cross Drive and heads back towards Newlands, finishing at the UCT Finish Fields.
Trail runs
The 24, 18 and 12 km trails start and finish at the UCT rugby fields (Upper Campus) and climb into the Table Mountain trails.
