The race
The Valtellina Wine Trail is the end-of-season classic that combines trail running with food and wine: three routes through the terraced vineyards and old villages of the middle Valtellina, passing inside some of the valley's most prestigious wineries. The 2026 edition takes place on Saturday 7 November, with every race finishing in Piazza Garibaldi in Sondrio.
There are three distances:
- 42 km and 1,750 m D+, starting at 9:45 from Piazza Cavour in Tirano
- 21 km and 900 m D+, starting at 10:30 from the stadium in Chiuro
- 13 km and 550 m D+ (Sassella Trail, also non-competitive), starting at 10:00 from Castione Andevenno
The route passes the Basilica of the Madonna di Tirano, the Torre de li Beli Miri and Palazzo Besta in Teglio, the Santa Casa in Tresivio and Castel Grumello. On Sunday 8 November central Sondrio hosts the Mini Wine Trail, the FIDAL mountain race for youth categories. For 2026 the three main races are sold out.

The 42 km starts in the historic centre of Tirano: from the Madonna di Tirano a short climb leads to the church of Santa Perpetua, then paths along dry-stone walls above Villa di Tirano and Bianzone lead to the Tenuta La Gatta. The first real climb goes from Boalzo to the Torre de li Beli Miri in Teglio (km 18); the route then descends to Chiuro (km 24), where it joins the half-marathon course.
The 21 km climbs the terraces of Valgella, Inferno and Grumello: it passes through the Nino Negri winery, then the villages and apple orchards of Ponte in Valtellina, Tresivio and Poggiridenti, up to Castel Grumello and the descent from the Dossi Salati towards Sondrio.
The 13 km starts in Castione Andevenno and rolls through the Sassella vineyards, passing through wineries, to Triasso and then Sondrio.
There are many aid stations, several inside wineries; the races are run in semi-self-sufficiency with no plastic cups, so runners need their own cup.
