The race
The Vienna City Marathon is the city's big marathon and the only race in Austria with a World Athletics Elite Label; the course is AIMS-measured and the race is part of the European Marathon Classics. The 44th edition takes place on Sunday 18 April 2027: the start is on Wagramer Straße at the Reichsbrücke over the Danube, from 9:00 in several waves, and the finish is on the Ringstraße in front of the Burgtheater, closing at 15:30.
The route takes in Vienna's best-known sights, with the long Prater Hauptallee as its centrepiece, and the difference between the lowest and highest points is only 44 metres. The same day features the Wiener Städtische Half Marathon, the Powerade Relay Marathon for teams of four and, at 8:00, the Tchibo Coffee Run 10K; on Saturday 17 April the Vienna 5K runs around the Ring from Schottentor.
The marathon, half and relay are sold out (around 39,000 entries in total) with waiting lists open; the 10K and 5K are still open. More than 60 cheering zones with music line the course, and before the race runners play alongside the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein in the Concert for the Marathon.

Course
The race starts on Wagramer Straße in Donaustadt and immediately crosses the Danube on the Reichsbrücke; the centrepiece of the course is the long, tree-lined Prater Hauptallee. The route then heads towards the centre and Vienna's best-known sights, including Linke Wienzeile towards Schönbrunn, and ends on the Ringstraße with the finish between the Burgtheater and Rathausplatz.
It is a fast city course: the difference between the lowest and highest points is just 44 metres. The marathon and half run together until km 20.3, where the fields separate at marked signs; marathon entrants may, in exceptional cases, stop at the half (with no refund of the difference). The relay has four legs of 15.5, 8, 7 and 11.695 km, with the handovers (in 2026) on Linke Wienzeile at Schönbrunn, at Roßauer Lände on the Danube Canal and on Meiereistraße by the Ernst-Happel-Stadion.
Split times every 5 km and at halfway, kilometre markers and toilets roughly every 5 km at the aid stations. In 2026 the aid stations served water in cups from hydrants, Powerade mixed on site, Coca-Cola and bananas, plus 15 water points with taps to drink from and refill bottles, the ESN gel at km 33.5, and runners could have their own drinks set out. More than 60 cheering zones with music line the 42.195 km.

Rules and requirements
The marathon is open to runners aged at least 18 on race day (those born 2009-2011 only with parental consent), the half from 16, the relay and 10K from 12; the Vienna 5K is open to anyone who can cover 5 km within an hour, including walkers, wheelchair users with a guide and parents with prams. No medical certificate is required: by registering you confirm you are healthy and able to finish within the time limit, and if unsure you undertake to seek medical advice; the Medical Center at the expo offers a free health check.
Fees are flat with no price tiers: marathon €155, half €130, relay €250 per team, 10K €55, Vienna 5K €14 under 23 and €40 for adults. There is no lottery: places go on a first-come basis and are already gone for the marathon, half and relay; the free waiting list allocates returned places until 7 March 2027 and charges the fee only if you get in.
The marathon starts from 9:00 in waves and the finish closes at 15:30; the half closes at 13:00, the 10K at 9:30 with a cut-off at km 5.7 at 8:55. Bibs only at the expo in the Marx Halle on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 April, never on Sunday. Fees are non-refundable (optional insurance at registration); marathon and half places can be transferred to someone you know for €30 until 12 March 2027 or moved to 2028 for €30 until 31 December 2026.
