The race

The Copenhagen Marathon has taken runners through the streets of København since 1980, when Sparta Atletik & Løb staged the first edition with 995 participants, 47 of them women. Today it is one of the most sought-after marathons in Europe and part of the new European Marathon Classics series of eight iconic European marathons.

The 2027 edition takes place on Sunday 9 May: the start area opens at 7:30 and the race starts at 9:30 on Østre Allé next to Fælledparken, where the finish is too. The flat course, measured by the Danish athletics federation, runs through the city centre, Østerbro, Christianshavn, Vesterbro, Nørrebro and Frederiksberg, past canals, bridges and royal palaces.

After the 2026 race sold out in less than 24 hours, the 2027 bibs were allocated for the first time through a free ballot: 80,937 people from more than 160 countries applied for 35,000 places. The Runners Area in Fælledparken has baggage storage, toilets, food and drink, and it is where friends and family meet runners after the finish.

Course

Start and finish are on Østre Allé, next to Fælledparken and the Runners Area. The 2027 course has not been published yet; the flat 2026 course covered all the main districts: around km 10 runners cross Knippelsbro, follow the old Stadsgraven moat through Christianshavn onto Amager and return over Langebro. After City Hall and Strøget, km 14 brings Queen Louise's Bridge (Dronning Louises Bro), where spectators and running clubs create a tunnel of music, followed by Nørrebro.

Around km 24 the course runs gently downhill along Frederiksberg Allé lined with Danish flags, at km 28 it follows Istedgade in Vesterbro, at km 31 it passes the Kaktus Towers and then goes under BLOX and past the Black Diamond. Around km 33 it crosses the centre via Kongens Nytorv, Nyhavn, Amalienborg Palace and the Marble Church, at km 36 it passes the yellow houses of Nyboder, before the final stretch along Østre Allé.

Along the way there are about ten aid stations with water and HIGH5 energy drink, some with bananas or gels, plus two Faxe Kondi zones; medics are at the start, the finish and every aid station.

Rules and requirements

Minimum age16 years
Time limit6 h

Anyone who is 16 or older on race day and able to complete the distance on their own can take part; blind or disabled runners are welcome with a guide (who registers too if they want a time, T-shirt and medal), and wheelchairs are allowed but not handbikes. The official website does not ask for a medical certificate or a federation licence.

For 2027 the bibs were allocated through a free ballot open from 13 May to 3 June 2026 (also in groups of up to three): selected runners had 48 hours to pay DKK 995 plus a DKK 20 fee, there is no waiting list and only the official charity partners and tour operators remain. The race starts at 9:30 in six colour-coded groups based on expected finish time, with pacers from 3 to 5 hours; the cut-off is 6 hours net for the marathon and 3 hours at halfway.

Bibs are collected only at the Expo in Forum København with photo ID and the start card sent by email; there is no pick-up on race day. Bibs are personal: they cannot be transferred or resold and there is no right of withdrawal; the only protection is the DKK 99 MySafety insurance, added at registration.
