The race

The DNB Oslo Maraton has been run through the streets of Oslo since 1981: that year Fred Lebow, founder of the New York Marathon, took part and called it an example for other organisers to follow. In the 1980s Grete Waitz and Ingrid Kristiansen helped turn it into a celebration of women's running, and today it is one of Norway's biggest road races, with more than 20,000 participants.

It is held on the third Saturday of September: the 2027 edition is on Saturday 18 September, starting and finishing at Rådhusplassen, the City Hall square. The marathon starts at 9:00 and runs two laps of the half marathon course, which starts at 13:00; in the afternoon come the 10 km wheelchair race at 16:00 and the 10 for Grete at 16:20, run in honour of Grete Waitz.

Those who want it all can run the Oslotrippelen, 73 km combining marathon, half and 10 km (already sold out). On the same day the Extra Oslo Mini Maraton for children up to 13 is held at Kontraskjæret. The event is owned by Sportsklubben Vidar and all profits go to the club and to youth sport; the race is part of the AbbottWMM Wanda Age Group rankings.

Course

All distances start and finish at Rådhusplassen, in front of Oslo City Hall. The 2027 course will be presented closer to the race; in 2026 the half marathon was a city loop through Skøyen, Frogner, Akershusstranda, Aker Brygge, Akershus Fortress, Bislett and Karl Johan, the main street. The marathon runs the half marathon loop twice and also passes Frognerparken.

In 2026 the elevation gain was about 175 metres for the half, 350 for the marathon and about 50 for the 10 km. Aid stations are roughly every 5 km with water, Maxim energy drink and bananas: marathon runners pass 11 including the one after the finish, half marathon runners 5.
