The race
The TCS Sydney Marathon takes place on Sunday 29 August 2027 and is the seventh Abbott World Marathon Major, added to the series in 2025, with a World Athletics Platinum Label. It is the last legacy of the 2000 Olympic Games open to everyone: the start is on Miller Street in North Sydney, at the same spot as the Olympic marathon, the course crosses the Sydney Harbour Bridge and, after Pyrmont, Hyde Park, Oxford Street, Moore Park and a lap of Centennial Park, finishes in front of the Sydney Opera House by way of the Royal Botanic Garden.
The course has 313 metres of elevation gain and an 83-metre net drop, with a 7-hour time limit. Places are allocated through a free ballot, open from 29 September to 19 October 2026 (the 2026 ballot drew 123,000 applications), through charity places or through packages from the official Travel Partners. Successful applicants pay AUD 285 if resident in Australia or New Zealand and AUD 340 if international, plus a carbon levy.
Elite wheelchairs start at 6:15 and the mass field at 6:30. Bibs and Finisher Shirts are collected at the TCS Sydney Marathon Running Show at Sydney Showground, Sydney Olympic Park, from 26 to 28 August, and the TCS Sydney Mini Marathon takes place on Saturday 28 August.

Course
The start is on Miller Street in North Sydney, at the same spot as the 2000 Olympic marathon: elite wheelchairs go at 6:15 and the mass field at 6:30, with group times announced later. In the first kilometres runners cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge and enter the city on the Western Distributor, then loop through Pyrmont (around km 5) and head back north along Darling Harbour (km 10) before passing through The Rocks and the city centre.
The course climbs past Hyde Park onto Oxford Street towards Darlinghurst (km 15), then Flinders Street and the long Anzac Parade, which runs past Moore Park and south beyond Kensington (km 20) before turning back. Around km 30 comes a lap of Centennial Park, then Moore Park again (km 35) and back into the centre via Hyde Park; the final stretch runs through the Royal Botanic Garden to Mrs Macquarie's Chair (km 40) and finishes in front of the Sydney Opera House.
The surface is asphalt, with 313 metres of elevation gain, an 83-metre net drop, bridges and tree-lined sections. Along the course there are water stations, water-and-electrolyte stations and energy gel stations, marked on the official map with 5 km markers; the official course is available as a GPX file. The time limit is 7 hours from the close of the start window.

Rules and requirements
Runners must be at least 18 on race day, and the race follows World Athletics rules. There are three ways in: the free ballot, open from 29 September to 19 October 2026, where cards are charged only if selected (on 3 November 2026); charity places, guaranteed to those who commit to fundraising for one of the charity partners and requested after the ballot results; and packages from the official International Travel Partners, with a guaranteed bib.
Finishers from 2022, 2023 or 2024 have a guaranteed place through the Candidacy Club until 2027. The fee is AUD 285 for residents of Australia and New Zealand and AUD 340 for international runners, plus a mandatory carbon levy. Fees are not refunded in any case, even if the race is cancelled, and bibs cannot be transferred or sold; deferrals are only offered for pregnancy and to serving Australian Defence Force members, and the organisers recommend Refund Protection.
Travel Partner clients can be swapped until 31 July 2027, and charity runners must complete fundraising and registration by 15 July 2027. The time limit is 7 hours from the close of the start window and assigned start groups cannot be changed. Prams, scooters, skateboards and handcycles are not allowed; racing wheelchairs are reserved for elite athletes or those with a sub-2:45 time. Bibs are collected in person only at the Running Show, with photo ID.
