The race

The RomaOstia Half Marathon has been taking runners from Rome to the sea since 1974: the 52nd edition is on Sunday 28 February 2027, with wave starts from 9:00 in front of the PalaEUR and the finish on Piazzale Cristoforo Colombo in Ostia, the Rotonda facing the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is organised by the Gruppo Sportivo Bancari Romani and listed in the World Athletics international calendar and the FIDAL national calendar.

The course, 21.097 km almost entirely along Via Cristoforo Colombo, is known for its speed: the race record is 58:00, set in 2026. Its roll of honour includes Steve Jones, Robert Cheruiyot and Stefano Baldini, who set the Italian record here in 1997, and in 2015 it reached over 12,000 entrants, more than any other Italian race, marathons included.

The stretch everyone remembers is the Camping climb, between the tenth and fourteenth kilometre, followed by a long descent towards the sea. Bags travel by truck from start to finish, and after the race you head back to Rome on the Roma-Lido train, which stops a short walk from the finish line. The current fee is €40 until 10 November 2026; entries close on 15 February 2027.

Course

The race starts on Via Cristoforo Colombo, against the usual traffic direction in front of the PalaEUR at Viale dell'Umanesimo, but the first kilometres stay inside the EUR district, on wide, flat roads with smooth asphalt: the bridge over the EUR lake, Viale Europa, Largo Kemal Atatürk, Viale dell'Umanesimo and Viale dell'Oceano Pacifico, rejoining the Colombo after the fourth kilometre. From there you run towards Ostia: a slight gradient to the Pontina junction, under the Grande Raccordo Anulare ring road and then a fast road.

Between km 10 and 14 comes the Camping climb: the first kilometre and a half is the hardest, with a gradient of no more than 3%, then it eases for another 1,400 metres up to the Acilia junction. Next is the fastest section, a descent of about 2.5 km, then a gently descending finale to the finish on Piazzale Cristoforo Colombo, facing the sea.

The course is the same as in recent editions. In 2026 the aid stations were at km 5.3, 11.6 and 16.4, with a sponge station at km 14.2. Split times at km 5, 10 and 15; cut-offs at km 10 (1h40) and km 15 (2h30), time limit 3h30.

After the line come the medal, refreshments and the bag trucks; the Cristoforo Colombo station of the Roma-Lido line is about 200-300 metres away.
