The race
The Reggio Emilia Marathon – City of the Tricolour, Parmigiano Reggiano Trophy, runs its 30th edition on Sunday 13 December 2026: born in 1996 from an idea of the UISP athletics league, it is one of Italy's historic end-of-season marathons and has also hosted the national championships. The start is at 9:00 in the old town, with a loop through Reggio's squares (Martiri del 7 Luglio, della Vittoria, del Monte), then the course follows the Crostolo stream and climbs gently to Montecavolo di Quattro Castella, at the foot of the hills, before returning to town.
The half marathon starts at 10:30 from Montecavolo and finishes in the centre, with shuttles from town to the start. The course record of 2h12'26" was set in 2022 by John Hakizimana of Rwanda. Entries are capped at 2,000 for the marathon and 1,200 for the half, with fees from €42 to €70. The Palazzetto dello Sport on Via Guasco, the event hub, hosts bib collection, changing rooms, showers and massages.
Course
Start on Corso Garibaldi and a first loop through the old town: Piazza Gioberti, Via Emilia Santo Stefano, Viale Isonzo, Piazza Martiri del 7 Luglio, Piazza della Vittoria, Corso Cairoli, Piazza del Monte, Via Emilia San Pietro, Viale Montegrappa, Via Ariosto, Piazza Roversi and Via Guasco by the Palazzetto. The course crosses Viale Timavo and follows the Lungo Crostolo, then Via Francia, Via Fratelli Rosselli and the Villa Levi park, Via Ghiarda and Via Strozzi south to Montecavolo di Quattro Castella (Viale Montegrappa, Via Togliatti, Piazza Nilde Iotti), where the half also starts.
The return goes via Via Freddi, Via Gambini, Via Ghiarda and Via San Rigo, back along the Crostolo and through Piazza Lepanto, Viale Umberto I and Piazza Diaz to Via Ariosto and Corso Garibaldi for the finish. The climb to Montecavolo is gentle and steady, the return slightly downhill. Aid stations at the start, finish and every 5 km with water, tea and sports drink; a table for personal drinks in front of the race centre.
