The race

The JAL Honolulu Marathon is held every year on the second Sunday of December: the 2026 edition is on Sunday 13 December, starting at 5:00 on Ala Moana Boulevard and finishing in Kapiʻolani Park, a short walk from Waikiki beach. It brings together more than 35,000 runners from around the world.

Its hallmark is that there is no time limit: everyone can reach the finish, walking or running. No qualifying times are needed and there is no lottery, you simply register. The start in the dark is lit up by a fireworks display.

The course crosses downtown Honolulu and Waikiki, loops around Diamond Head, heads out towards Hawaii Kai and returns to the park with the ocean in view for much of the way. Finishers receive a medal and a finisher shirt, with showers and the traditional malasadas.

The same weekend also features the Start to Park 10k (Sunday at 5:00) and the Kalakaua Merrie Mile (Saturday 12 December at 7:00).

Course

From downtown to Waikiki

The race starts on Ala Moana Boulevard, next to Ala Moana Beach Park. In the early miles the course runs along the harbour and the Aloha Tower, enters Chinatown and crosses downtown on South King Street, then returns towards Ala Moana and crosses the Ala Wai Canal.

At mile 5 runners enter Waikiki, among the hotels and Kalakaua Avenue, with the first ocean view.

Diamond Head and the east coast

From mile 6 the course loops around the zoo and Kapiʻolani Park and climbs towards Diamond Head, the extinct volcanic crater. From mile 10 it passes through Kahala onto the Kalanianaole Highway, which runs for four miles through Waialae Iki, Aina Haina and Niu Valley.

Between miles 15 and 19 comes the Hawaii Kai loop around an inland waterway, with Koko Head crater in the background. Then the route doubles back along the same highway.

The finish

At mile 22 the course passes Waialae Country Club; in the last two miles it rounds Diamond Head again, passing the lighthouse and the Cliffs surf spot, and reaches Kapiʻolani Park along Kalakaua Avenue.
