The race

The Mugello Marathon presents itself as Italy's oldest marathon: in 2026 it reached its 52nd edition, held in memory of Roberto Gherardi, Franco Sargenti and Mario Boretti. It is organised by A.S.D. Maratona Mugello with the municipality of Borgo San Lorenzo, near Florence, and is part of the FIDAL national calendar.

By tradition, start and finish are in Piazza Dante in Borgo San Lorenzo. The certified course crosses the Mugello valley among hills of olive groves and vineyards and touches Vicchio, San Piero a Sieve, Scarperia and the stretch alongside the Mugello Circuit. The Mezza Mugello Marathon half marathon is run on the same day.

For 2027 entries are open on ENDU with the date 26 September 2027; the new rules, times and fees are not yet on the official website.

Course

The course, measured and certified by FIDAL, is the classic one of recent editions, partly following the old route. In 2026:

Piazza Dante (Borgo San Lorenzo) → SP 551 towards Vicchio → Ponte a Vicchio → SP 41 towards Borgo San Lorenzo → Sagginale → SR 302 Via Faentina → Serravalle → SP 97 Cardetole → San Piero a Sieve → SP 503 towards Scarperia → SP 42 Via Buozzi, next to the Mugello Circuit → Luco di Mugello → finish in Piazza Dante.

  • Course marked on the road with a continuous green line from start to finish
  • Roads partly closed or with limited traffic: the highway code applies
  • Many aid stations run by volunteers; you may carry your own bottle and supplies
  • Medical assistance along the whole course and first aid at the finish
